Nabla Wind Hub leads the SCALE-UP Project

28 Oct 2024

Nabla Wind Hub, as leader and coordinator of the SCALE-UP project ("Research in Hybrid Testing Methodologies to Scale Towards the Next Generation of High-Reliability Wind Turbine Components"), runs this innovative initiative as part of the HAZITEK 2024 program, funded by the Basque Government's Department of Industry, Energy Transition, and Sustainability.

Over the next three years, Nabla Wind Hub will coordinate eight key companies in the wind energy sector validating the reliability of large mechanical and structural components in wind turbines, using advanced calculation methodologies to replace large-scale physical tests. This innovative approach will make it possible to accurately predict the failure of these critical components, positioning the Basque Country at the forefront of cutting-edge technology for the wind industry.

"The purpose of SCALE-UP is to reduce the need for extensive physical testing, which requires a transformation in current validation methodologies. With our key role in the project, Nabla Wind Hub drives the development of hybrid testing techniques that enable real-scale failure prediction, optimizing time and resources and increasing sustainability in wind turbine component design." Alfonso San Emeterio, General Manager of NWP and SCALE-UP project coordinator.

A Leading Consortium in the Basque Wind Energy Sector

In addition to Nabla Wind Hub, leading Basque companies such as Atten2, ERREKA, Galvasala, GLUAL ENERGY, HINE GROUP, Intza S.A., Sidenor, and Virlab, are taking part in the project, contributing their expertise to strengthen the wind industry and improve the reliability of its components.

The project also collaborates with seven agents from the Basque Science, Technology, and Innovation Network (RVCTI), who will enhance project capabilities with their research and development expertise. This includes four technology centers (Ikerlan, Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Tecnalia, and Tekniker), two business R&D units (Glual Innova AIE and Sidenor I+D), and the Basque Energy Cluster, which will support project coordination within the industrial sector.

"Since the beginning, Nabla has been committed to innovation, an ongoing effort that has allowed us to remain at the technological forefront of the sector. The opportunity to lead a project like SCALE-UP, focused on scalable solutions, strengthens our mission to continue this path. We are excited to begin this new challenge and to be able to work with the exceptional team involved in this project." stated Alfonso San Emeterio, General Manager of NWP and SCALE-UP project coordinator.
